Judicial Reception

COMMITTEE

TWL’s Judicial Reception is traditionally held every year in October and celebrates local members of the judiciary. This year, due to COVID-19, the Judicial Reception is scheduled to take place in May. The Reception is a large event requiring a lot of planning and coordination.  If you are interested in serving on the Judicial Reception Committee, please contact judicialreception@mytwl.org.

The Mentoring Committee collaborates with the Women Law Symposium at the Florida State University College of Law in matching local attorneys with law students for the purpose of mentoring. The matching usually commences in September after the law students are settled in for the new school year and kicks off with a fall mixer at a local restaurant. There is also a spring mixer to bring all the mentors and mentees together again. The remainder of the school year, the mentor and mentee connect on their own terms and schedule. Committee members host a table at the law school orientation for new and returning law students to learn about TWL and the mentorship program.

The Mentoring Committee also organizes several Table of 8 events where an attorney or member of the judiciary hosts a lunch or dinner event and 8 attorneys or students gather for a meal to discuss their careers. Every Table of 8 has at least one judge who attends. To serve on the Mentoring Committee or to sign up to be a mentor, contact mentoring@mytwl.org

JNC Monitoring

COMMITTEE

Members of TWL’s Judicial Nominating Commission Monitoring Committee monitor the various JNC interviews of judicial applicants. The Committee attempts to switch out TWL and Committee members to accommodate busy schedules, and monitors can stay for as long as they like. To serve on the JNC Monitoring Committee, please contact jncmonitoring@mytwl.org.

Any member of TWL under the age of 36 at the beginning of the fiscal year or within the members first 5 years of practice in any jurisdiction, regardless of the member’s age, automatically qualifies for membership in the Young Lawyer’s Section. No additional payment of dues is required for membership. The Young Lawyers Committee plans and hosts numerous social events and programs throughout the year, open to all members of TWL. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact younglawyerschair@mytwl.org

Community Service & Special Events

COMMITTEE

TWL believes in doing good while having fun! This Committee focuses on connecting TWL members to the community through fun and philanthropic activities throughout the year.  Past and annual events include the Legal Aid Foundation Annual Chili Cook-off, a donation-based barre class benefiting Hang Tough Foundation, a Women Build event with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and a festive Holiday Party raising awareness and collecting donations for local community projects. To join this Committee, please contact communityservice@mytwl.org.

TWL strives to support and promote its members and their accomplishments. This committee monitors awards of the Florida Bar, local organizations, and voluntary bar associations, determines deserving nominees within our membership or legal community, and creates nomination packets for submission. If you are interested in serving on the Awards Committee, please contact awardschair@mytwl.org.

Pace Mock Trial

PROGRAM

TWL is proud to partner with the PACE Center for Girls to conduct a mock-trial program for students to learn more about the legal process and to promote self-confidence in the PACE girls. Throughout the 8-week semester, volunteers work with student teams to develop their case from start to finish -- learning the facts, preparing direct and cross-examinations, and writing opening statements and closing arguments. At the end of the semester, the girls participate in a mock jury trial in a courtroom at the Division of Administrative Hearings, followed by a pizza party celebration. If you are interested in volunteering with this program, contact Timisha Brooks Black at pmc.chair@mytwl.org.

This professional women's exchange network ("WE" network") aims to create a supportive referral network of both attorneys and other female professionals in the local community. TWL encourages all of its members to ensure their information is current on the WE Network and to use this website for professional referrals. To assist with this project, contact WEnetwork@mytwl.org.
